Meeting at Birkenhead Wharf at 9:00am to catch the 9:35am Ferry, returning on the 11:40am Ferry from downtown.

This guided bike ride is aimed for people who ride currently, who use the city (or surrounding area) and want to try cycling round town but aren't sure how to use our new cycle paths and where they connect.  The ride is not limited to those working in town and anyone wanting a day out exploring is welcome to join the ride.

We will be catching the ferry to the Downtown Ferry Building, meeting for a briefing where the Next Bike hire bikes are on Queens Wharf.  From there we will head east along the Quay Street Cycle way, along the Beach Road Cycleway, up the Grafton Gully Cycle way and Upper Queen street to the start of the North Western Cycleway on Ian Mckinnon Drive.  Then we head down hill via Canada Street Te Ara I Whiti (the pink path) before heading back down the Nelson Street Cycleway, crossing through Victoria Park, through to Silo Park and back through North Wharf and the Viaduct to the Quay Street Cycleway where we will head back on the ferry to Birkenhead.

Most of the journey will be on protected cycleways though some will be on shared paths (share with care) and small sections will be on road.

Riders should be comfortable riding on the road, riding the distance described above and riding hills. You will need a road legal bicycle, helmet, your hop card or cash for your ferry fare, water, sunscreen and appropriate clothing keeping in mind it is spring in Auckland.

What to bring:

  • Your AT HOP card or ferry fare
  • Money for coffee
  • A roadworthy bike
  • Your helmet
  • Enclosed footwear
  • Sunscreen
  • A jacket
  • Water
  • A sense of adventure and your smile

If you are joining us at Birkenhead Wharf catching the ferry it departs at 9:35am from here:

If you are going to meet us downtown we will be departing Queens Wharf about 9:50am from here:

The Bike Kaipatiki team invites you on a social bike ride to explore the less frequently traveled upper reaches of Kaipatiki!

Starting from and returning to Columbus Coffee at Smales Farm, our route will take in:
- A close-up of some remarkable architecture
- Weird sculptures in a wetlands renovation
- Bush scenes that will make you think you’re in back-blocks NZ
- A strange subterranean tunnel more reminiscent of a Hobbit movie
- A stunning lake
- High performance sport in action
- Bucolic scenes you surely wouldn’t expect in the heart of a metropolis.

Come and join us on a voyage of discovery into parts of the Shore you perhaps never knew existed, or at least probably haven’t seen from the saddle of a bike.

Starting at 8am from Smales (where you may want to drive to with your bike on a rack), we’ll make our way north using as many off-road paths as we can. Unfortunately of necessity there will be some parts of the route where we’re on-road sharing with cars, so you need to be comfortable about riding on the road. There will also be some hills, but we’ve kept the gradients as easy as possible.

You’ll be in a group with a ride leader and Tail-End-Charlie who will ensure we all keep together as safely as possible. If you lack a bit of fitness or road confidence - don’t worry. We’ll all stay together to maximise the enjoyment. This isn’t a race, and there will be plenty of stops to look at the attractions and catch a breather.

We’ll ride north for an hour or so, arriving at Altura Cafe in Douglas Alexander Parade where the team from Bike Albany are welcome to join us for a coffee. After suitable refreshments we’ll return to Smales via the same route. No problems if some participants would like to return home independently from Altura.

Hope you can join us - will be good to get a ride in before winter starts to bite. And the weather? The odd shower won’t put us off, but if it’s thoroughly miserable we’ll cancel. Keep an eye on this page for details. See you at Smales from 7.30am for a pre-ride coffee to make a start at 8am.

Highbury Community House is hosting a Repair Café at the Birkenhead Primary School Hall this Saturday from 10am to 1pm.

Bike Kaipātiki will be there fixing bikes, if you are passing by do pop in and say hello and if you have a bike needing a little TLC and a tune, bring it down and we'll get you back on the road.

Meet other Bike Kaipātiki members, discuss issues affecting cyclists in our community and help shape the activities and actions Bike Kaipātiki will take in the coming months.
We are meeting at Tongue and Groove Cafe Birkenhead from 8am to 10am on Sunday the 23rd of April.  All are welcome, you just need an interest in cycling in Kaipātiki.
