Sunday 12 June - Birkenhead War Memorial Park - 11 AM
Bike Kaipātiki provided mechanical support and information to riders at the Kaipātiki Local Boards opening of the pump track in Birkenhead War Memorial Park.
Organised by KCFT and the Kaipātiki Youth Board the opening had a bouncy castle, free sausages and refreshments, loan bikes as well as some pro riders on hand to demonstrate the capabilities of the track.
One estimate had attendance at 250 bikes and it was encouraging to see riders of all ages giving it a go. Riders of the future were well represented and the weather held providing an excellent family mid-winter weekend activity.
Pump tracks are designed primarily for BMX riders and features a series of twists, turns and humps for riders to ride, jump and navigate. The pro riders certainly demonstrated how to use the track to its full advantage demonstrating various tricks before finishing the first bracket with a backflip.
Bike Kaipātiki members talked to a number of people in the crowd and sorted out a lot of bikes and scooters with bells. On hand in the Gazebo we had a range of information for people looking for places to ride as well as the usual assortment of giveaways and our new promotional material.
